An internet business is a simple business to start for most people but to ensure success there are some things you need to be aware. In this post, I am going to share the 5 things to avoid if you want to succeed with an online business.

1. Having a wrong type of support

When people start an internet business, they are excited and have all sorts of plans to make the business a success. Imagine this, you expect people around you like friends and family to be also excited for you and you start discussing your plans and visions. However, in my experience, most people who have not gone through the similar training on internet business, they do not have much clue on how it actually works. So the question to ask yourself when seeking support from your family and friends is  ‘are these people who have done what I am trying to do and succeeded?’ If you try to talk to them about your business, they want to know whether you are making any money yet. Then what do you think happens next? They will start by telling you what they think about what you are trying to do, I am sure with the best intentions. Just because it might be that there is no other family member who has succeeded with an internet business, it is possible that people have negative views about it. They might even think an internet business is a kind of ‘hype’. What happens is that you start listening to them because you trust their opinions and end up not getting anywhere. Self-doubt and discomfort set in as your path may be very different from that of others. All this is because you are listening to people who know nothing about building a successful online business. Instead, get support from people who have already succeeded in what you are trying to do. Find a mentor and peers who can take you through the process step by step.

2. Listening to bad advice

You also might start attending a local business start-up networking events for moral support and to exchange ideas. This is a waste of time. Others who have just started up selling something completely different, cannot advise you on how you can succeed in your business. They might even eagerly tell you what software they are using to set up a website or other tools to market their products. You might rush back home and sign up to all sorts of things but all it will do is to overwhelm you with more information while you try to figure things out by yourself. You will lose valuable time like this by not focusing on the most fundamental work needed to build a successful business. Information only becomes useful when you know exactly how you can apply it to your own circumstance. Instead, mingle with successful people who can help you through the process and give more practical advice which is directly related to your own business.

3. Not allowing enough time to get results

Just because everything happens instantly online nowadays, it does not mean you start making a lot of money straight away. Like any traditional business, people need to get told about your business and what you are offering. One of the reasons many internet start-ups fail is because most people give up too quickly. People who take on the challenge of running their own business should do so with an intention to make a commitment to succeed. Running a business should not be treated like a gym membership or a new diet method which you readily give up after a short period of the trial. There is enough evidence of other people succeeding with online business, if you continue to do the right things for your business, it should only be a matter of time before results start rolling in.

4. Treating your business like a hobby

This is quite common. Being able to start the business around your existing commitments and with a very little financial investment are two of the advantages of internet business. But a lot of people make a mistake of not viewing the business seriously enough and treat it like a hobby or a past time. That not only slows your progress greatly, you will not get the results quickly enough and will end up giving up and declaring something like ‘I tried, but it didn’t work’. If your goal is to build a business so that you can start turning your financial circumstance around, you have to dedicate yourself to it like this is the only chance you have. If you start your business with a mindset of ‘it didn’t cost me much to start so it does not matter if it fails’, you are setting yourself up to fail. You might as well not start it in the first place.

5. Not preparing to grow as a person

One of the traits shared by the most successful people in the world in whatever sector of business they are in is that they never stop learning. Successful people regularly invest their time and effort in self-development and actively seek self-growth. There will be times that you need to challenge your own limiting beliefs in order to move forward. There will be times you come across hurdles, but learning to overcome such obstacles is part of human growth and it is a kind of skill that you can learn to develop. If you are not prepared to do that, your business is most likely to suffer. But if you continue to grow as a human being, you will notice that the growth of your business is accelerated. You will start attracting the right type of people into your life and your whole life experience will be enhanced like never before.  As a result, you will start fulfilling your true dreams.
